On Camera Acting and Verticals - Next Class March 10!

In 2025 I spent a lot of time behind the monitor on sets and realized it's easy to tell which actors have experience working in front of the camera. Most on camera classes are focused on self tapes - they don't actually teach you how to work on set. In this class we'll have two cameras set up with a monitor, we'll do some exercises designed to replicate the set experience, then you'll get notes and feedback before doing the scene again.

My goal is to give you the reps and tools you need to book work, deliver a great performance on the first take, and implement direction quickly so that you get hired again and again.

What you get in this class:
  • Reps every week with scene partners in front of two cameras and you keep the footage
  • Watch the monitor while your classmates work to see it from the director's perspective
  • Practice taking and applying notes from a director
  • Gain a basic understanding of lenses and camera terms
  • Experience being on set in a low stakes environment
  • Work with assigned material or bring your own - audition material is welcome
  • Learn about verticals, character types, and what roles you'd be good for

We'll also talk about stuff like headshots, networking, how to make a good impression when the camera is not rolling, and we'll cover safety and boundaries. Verticals can be very chaotic but you should always feel safe and comfortable - we'll talk about what to do if you don't.

Classes will be at Thymele Arts Center - 5481 Santa Monica Blvd in Hollywood on Tuesdays from 6:30-9:30pm. Next session runs March 10 - March 31.

About me...

I went to school for classical music and played oboe professionally before quitting music to pursue comedy in Chicago (Second City, iO). I studied Meisner at Black Box Acting, took writing and directing classes all over, and bought a camera and taught myself how to edit so I could start making videos with friends. I toured the country as the emcee of Odd Squad, LIVE!, a musical theater role that required the classic acting/singing/dancing as well as a lot of improv with kids in the audience. My first short film played at 20 festivals and won three awards.

Not a wheelchair user but set hours are long and a chair is a chair...
In 2025 I worked as a script supervisor on about a dozen verticals shooting 10-18 pages a day and, as a forever learner, I was constantly asking the director questions. After about six months with the same director he started to let me take the lead directing scenes. My approach as a teacher is to give you the tools you need then lay a trail of breadcrumbs for you to teach yourself. With me you'll learn a lot, teach yourself and others a lot, and have some great laughs along the way.
